Default Best oil for Avgas-fueled 912

I've been using Avgas in my 912 (#113) with AV-9 from CPS.

But now my AP/IA, says that Lockwood is recommending Shell Aerosport 4.

What say you?

BTW, if you haven't cleaned out the gunk (which i believe is lead) from your oil reservoir, it's a good idea. I don't think mine was ever done, and after a decade it wasn't too bad. But it can backup and clog stuff.

thx, Bruce

Hey Bruce,

Here's what you need to know:

http://www.aero-hesbaye.be/ROTAX/pdf...-1997%20R5.pdf

I run Valvoline Duralube, but I mostly run ethanol free UL93 (about 98% of the time). The only time I run 100LL is if I'm out and about. When I went to Rotax school at Lockwood they did talk about the Shell product, but I don't recall it being recommended over any of the others. It really depends on the type fuel you run.

BTW, in regard to cleaning out the oil tank, if you run 100LL regularly you should clean it out at every oil change. Mine had about 3/4" of lead sludge in the bottom of the oil tank when I bought it. I doubt it had ever been cleaned. Not surprising considering most A&P's are stuck in Lyconosaur mode. If you notice there is a clean "ring" on the bottom of the oil tank below the oil pick up tube you're already pumping lead back into the engine. Also, changing your oil at 25 hour intervals is recommended if you use 100LL exclusively, even if you use TCP or other lead scavenging additives.

Hope it helps!

Regards,

John Lawton
